  • Tasting note

Deep ruby red in the glass, with a lively purple rim that hints at its youth. The nose opens with ripe red fruit and cherry, joined by Mediterranean herbs and a touch of volcanic minerality. On the palate the wine is spicy and fresh, with juicy red fruit, a hint of pomegranate and soft, ripe tannins that give it structure without weight. The finish is long and mineral, with a subtle smoky note that betrays its time in oak. Let the wine breathe for twenty minutes before serving at 16-18°C, with grilled meat, hearty stews, mushroom risotto or game birds.

    About this wine

Masseria Setteporte lies on the southwestern slope of Mount Etna, near the Sicilian village of Biancavilla, at an altitude of 600 to 800 metres. The certified organic estate has belonged to the Portale winemaking family for generations and works exclusively with the volcano's native grape varieties. The grapes for this Etna Rosso — 95% Nerello Mascalese, 5% Nerello Cappuccio — grow on Etna's southwestern slope, at 650 to 800 metres, on volcanic soil streaked with lava. The vines are over forty years old and are harvested by hand in early October. After five days of skin contact, the wine ferments with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks. It then ages for about twelve months in oak barrels and a further eight months in bottle, which gives the wine its spicy depth and soft structure.
