This Masada Negroamaro (2019, Brindisi DOC) comes from a vineyard of Negroamaro vines over sixty years old, still trained as low, wireless alberello bushes. Part ages in American oak, the rest in steel, for a firm, structured red.
Deep, concentrated ruby red in the glass. The nose opens with ripe dark fruit — blackberry and black cherry — layered with spiced notes from the American oak and a hint of undergrowth. On the palate the Masada is full and firm, its juicy dark fruit carried by a persistent tannic structure that will continue to unfold with age. The finish is long, dry and spicy, with a light oaky note lingering. Serve this robust red at around 17-18°C, alongside grilled or braised red meat such as roast lamb or a hearty ragù — a wine with real character that calls for good company at the table.
Tenute Lu Spada is a young winery from Brindisi, founded in 2015 between Lake Cillarese and the Adriatic Sea. It farms almost entirely organically and focuses on the native grapes of Salento, with vineyards whose setting gives the wines a distinctly fresh, maritime character.
The name Masada refers to the fortress in Judea where archaeologists found Roman wine amphorae shipped from Brindisi and filled with wine from grower Laenius — the find behind Tenute Lu Spada's mission to revive that ancient tradition. When the estate acquired this land, it inherited a gift: one hectare of Negroamaro vines over sixty years old, trained as alberello — precisely the vineyard the Masada comes from.
Fermentation takes place at 27-28°C with ten days of skin maceration, followed by malolactic fermentation. Part ages in American oak barriques, the rest in stainless steel, giving a persistent tannic structure that will keep unfolding with age — the estate's most structured wine, available only in limited quantity.
