In the glass, this Laenius shows a bright ruby-red colour with violet hints. The nose opens with ripe dark fruit — cherry, plum and blueberry — before warmer notes of cinnamon and nutmeg emerge, framed by a subtle spicy undertone. On the palate the wine is juicy and round, with a firm yet supple structure: fine, velvety tannins meet a fresh acidity that keeps the ripe fruit in check and carries the 14% alcohol with ease. The finish is pleasantly long, closing on red fruit, spice and a touch of earthiness. Serve this Malvasia Nera at room temperature, around 16-18°C, alongside grilled meats, hearty tomato-based pasta or aged southern Italian cheeses.

    About this wine

Tenute Lu Spada is a young winery from Brindisi, founded in 2015 between Lake Cillarese and the Adriatic Sea. It farms almost entirely organically and focuses on the native grapes of Salento, with vineyards whose setting gives the wines a distinctly fresh, maritime character.

The wine's name honours Laenius, a Roman wine producer from ancient Brindisi. Excavations beneath the fortress of Masada in Judea uncovered fragments of Roman wine amphorae shipped from Brindisi, once filled with his wine — a find over twenty centuries old. That discovery gave Tenute Lu Spada not only this wine's name, but also its mission to revive Brindisi's ancient winemaking tradition.

Laenius is a pure Malvasia Nera, fermented in stainless steel and aged on steel for a year before three months in bottle — for a round, well-balanced red from Salento.
