Sauvignon Blanc from steep slopes between 450 and 600 metres, unoaked and rested on the fine lees. Elderflower, gooseberry and exotic fruit, with a saline lift. James Suckling gave this vintage 91 points.
Straw yellow with green reflections. The nose is outspoken but never loud: elderflower and gooseberry first, with exotic fruit behind them. After five years in bottle the aromatics have grown a little more restrained and the wine has gained in spice. On the palate it is juicy and balanced, with lively acidity carrying the structure. A saline note from the dolomite-rich subsoil gives elegance and draws out the finish. Serve with shellfish, asparagus, goat’s cheese or a salad with fresh herbs.
Kellerei Kurtatsch is a cooperative in the South Tyrolean village of Kurtatsch, founded in 1900 by forty-two growers. Today 190 member families farm 190 hectares of vineyard between 220 and 900 metres. Erwin Carli is the cellar master.
This Sauvignon belongs to the SELECTION line, the regional wines of Kurtatsch. The plots lie on steep slopes between 450 and 600 metres, on sandy and gravelly soils rich in dolomite.
The cool evening winds at Kurtatsch regulate temperature and so create the conditions for a fine, restrained Sauvignon.
After very brief skin contact the wine ferments in temperature-controlled stainless steel, then rests on the fine lees. No oak is involved.
