Pinot Bianco from cool slopes at 500 to 650 metres, unoaked and rested on the fine lees. At five years of age this vintage has traded fresh fruit for depth.
Straw yellow with a golden sheen that shows its years. On the nose the primary apple and pear fruit has moved into the background and made way for riper tones: dried pear, hazelnut and a light touch of honey, with a fresh citrus core still underneath. On the palate the wine is rounder and softer than in its youth, with a creamy texture from ageing on the fine lees. The acid structure is still lively — precisely what a cool mountain year delivers — and the saline minerality of the dolomite soil carries the finish. Drink it now. Serve with poultry, matured cheese or pan-fried fish.
Kellerei Kurtatsch is a cooperative in the South Tyrolean village of Kurtatsch, founded in 1900 by forty-two growers. Today 190 member families farm 190 hectares of vineyard between 220 and 900 metres. Erwin Carli is the cellar master.
This Pinot Bianco belongs to the SELECTION line, the estate’s regional wines. The variety is at its best on the cool, south-east facing slopes between 500 and 650 metres, where the vines root in gravelly, calcareous dolomite subsoil.
The grapes ferment in temperature-controlled stainless steel, after which the wine rests on the fine lees. No oak is involved.
Only a small remaining lot of this vintage is available.
