The Chardonnay di Monteverro 2023 in magnum is the gastronomic incarnation of one of the most distinctive white wines of the Tuscan coast. Made from 100% organically grown Chardonnay, fermented and aged in equal parts of French barrique and concrete egg, this wine unites the finesse and minerality of great Burgundies with the saline signature of the Maremma. The magnum format — 1.5 litres, with a more favourable wine-to-oxygen ratio — significantly extends the wine's ageing potential and allows for an even slower, more harmonious development in bottle.
In the glass, a brilliant pale gold-yellow with green reflections and mercury-like flashes on the rim. On the nose, a refined and layered bouquet: ripe pear, apricot and yellow apple are followed by subtle notes of toasted brioche, lychee and white flowers, with hints of flint and mountain hay in the background. On the palate, a round and fresh entry opens into a vibrant, citrus-driven mid-palate — mirabelle plum, white peach, vanilla and lemon tart. The body is medium and creamy, supported by a lively acidity. The finish is long, finely mineral and saline, with a characteristic touch of slate and grapefruit that gives this Chardonnay its unmistakable coastal character. The magnum format enhances the wine's tension and aromatic depth: decant well in advance, or cellar for several more years to allow full development. A wine for lobster with beurre blanc, grilled turbot, risotto with wild mushrooms and 24-month aged Comté.
Monteverro is the leading coastal estate of Julia and Georg Weber in Capalbio, in the southern Maremma. Originally inspired by Bordeaux but with a distinctive signature of its own, they have been building a reference estate for Tuscan coastal wines since 2003. Although the range is largely dedicated to Bordeaux and Rhône varieties, the estate considers its Chardonnay one of its most important labels. This Chardonnay represents a challenge that only succeeds in a handful of locations along the Tuscan coast. The grapes grow on clay and limestone soils, planted at 7,575 vines per hectare in east-west orientation — a deliberate choice, unlike the rest of the estate's parcels, to limit direct sun exposure. The vines are also trained exceptionally high, so the grapes catch less reflected heat from the ground. The constant sea breeze and cool nights give the Chardonnay its characteristic tension and aromatic clarity. Harvest is carried out entirely by hand, with picking dates precisely adapted to each section of the Chardonnay parcels. In the cellar, whole clusters are gently pressed and a spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts follows. All movement takes place by gravity. The wine is aged for fourteen months on fine lees in a carefully chosen split: 50% in French barriques (of which only 10% are new oak) and 50% in concrete eggs. This combination lends the wine texture, complexity and subtle spice, while the concrete preserves freshness, minerality and aromatic purity. The wine is unfined and only lightly filtered before bottling. The magnum is the format par excellence for wines that deserve time. Thanks to the more favourable ratio between wine volume and oxygen beneath the cork, this Chardonnay develops considerably more slowly in magnum than in standard bottles — preserving fruit, freshness and aromatic definition far into its drinking window. A bottle for the table where time and company come together: around a whole lobster, a long lunch with white fish, or a Christmas dinner with matching dishes. A wine produced in extremely limited quantities — Monteverro's total Chardonnay production amounts to approximately 5,000 bottles per year, of which only a small share is bottled in magnum.
